Stagno di Molentargius

Not far from Poetto Beach you will find a pond called Stagno di Molentargius, a little area situated a few steps far from  Cagliari, near the built up area in the outskirts of the city.  If you want to visit the inland of the pond you need to join a guided tour, but if you just want to see it from outside, there are many spots from where you can enjoy lovely sceneries. The best ones are on Monte Urpinu’s Hill, along Poetto’s promenade and Viale Colombo’s one at Quartu.

One of the main attractions of the pond are the pink flamingoes that live there and at present they have become one of the symbols of this area. This kind of flamingoes usually nest in French Camargue, but because of Sardinia’s mild climate, these animals have chosen  it as an ideal place to winter for a long time now. They started to nest in Molentargiu’s pond in the early 1990s so the pond is now considered one of the most important spots in Italy and Europe from an point environmental point of view and for its wildlife.
