La Basilica di Santa Croce

Santa Croce’s Basilica

When you walk along the bastion of Santa Croce, leaving the Tower of the Elephant behind, you can’t help being attracted by the wonderful bird’s eye view of the city of Cagliari.

As you approach the ghetto of the Jews, you might hardly notice Santa Croce’s basilica, hidden as it is in a tight widening surrounded by houses concealing it to the eyesight of careless tourists.

La Cattedrale

La Cattedrale

The Cathedral

Walking in the city centre, you get to Palazzo Square. If you look up, you will see the façade of the Cathedral, with its impressive grandeur.

It is consecrated to our Lady of the Assumption and to St. Cecilia martyr; it is the main church in the area and in the city.

Cittadella dei Musei - Esterni

Cittadella dei Musei - Esterni

The Citadel of Museums

This cultural centre was created around 1950, following up the decision to widen the seat of the archeological Museum and of the picture gallery of the city and to build a centre intended to represent  Sardinian art and history. Just out of curiosity, we know that under the rule of Pisa, the area of the Citadel was separated from the Castle by a large moat and it was connected to  it by a  drawbridge.

Il Ghetto degli Ebrei

Il Ghetto degli Ebrei

The Ghetto of Jews

It was wrongly named Ghetto of Jews because it was situated near the area where the Jews lived.

Nowadays it is the seat of the Art and Culture Council Centre and its rooms, which are placed on four levels, host many cultural events, temporary exhibitions and other meetings

Bastione di Saint Remy

The Bastion of St Remy

When you have a walk in the historical centre, going along lanes and little streets  stretching among houses crammed on one another, in a moment you will find yourself on a great terrace overlooking the city of Cagliari.

The Bastion is one of the most recent parts of Castello, dating back to the end of the 19th century, while the rest of the district  is of medieval origin.

La Torre di San Pancrazio

La Torre di San Pancrazio

The Tower of St Pancrazio

It is the highest in Cagliari, one of  the symbols of the District of Castello, and  it represents its top, the height from where one dominates everything else.

The Tower of St. Pancrazio is certainly one of the monuments which is worth a visit.

From the top of the tower it is possible to admire a  really suggestive outlook.

Il Palazzo Viceregio - facciata

Il Palazzo Viceregio - facciata

The Rojal Palace

When you have a walk in the historical centre of Cagliari, if you go along Via Roma and Viale  Regina Margherita and go past the Bastion of Saint Remy, you will find yourself in front of an old building: the Royal Palace, also known as the Palace of the Viceroy.

It was the  house of the representative of the king who used to live here during the Aragonese, Spanish and Savoy rules. At present it is the seat of  the offices of the Prefecture and of the Province of Cagliari.

La Torre dell'Elefante

La Torre dell'Elefante

The Tower of the Elephant

The Tower of the Elephant is the second highest tower in Cagliari (in fact the Tower of St. Pancrazio is the highest one), but it is one of the most important symbols of the historical District of Castello and an identification sign for the whole city. In the past it was a defensive rampart against the attacks by the people from Genoa or by the Arabs and it is still one of the ways to get to the quarter.
